“CNN said the world is $217 trillion dollars in debt… who the f**k we owe? The Decepticons?”
— Late-night talk show guest
In order for victims to exist there has to be perpetrators. In order for there to be perpetrators, there has to be ignorance of unity. Ignorance of unity however, (and this is the important part) does not mean absence of unity.
If unity were truly absent, then judging, condemning and crucifying others would be perfectly logical. Hoarding, capitalism and poverty would be efficient systems. Building religions around a victim identity would seem like a pretty good idea. Winning the praises of a God that would otherwise happily banish you to a fiery pit for eternity would be a pretty sweet deal (and worth fighting for!). If unity were truly absent, then life would obviously not be worth living (which is why most human beings at the moment live as such).
Fortunately (and that’s a big fortunately), unity IS truth; always has been. Nonetheless, ignorance of unity is an evolutionary step, not an evolutionary mistake. We are very willfully born into a world that appears separate in every way; there’s you, me, them, this, that, and everything else in between. Through this cosmic con job, our minds evolve through trial and error; through over-identifying with a body and then over-personalizing that identity. We stumble our way through life, hurting, maiming, and pillaging as we try our damnedest to figure out just what the hell is going on and how best to handle it. Finally, our attempt to solve life fails and we see that our very approach to life itself might be what’s in need of a do-over. The end of ignorance begins.
Each and every step of this ending process is essentially the same; you perceive yourself to be a victim, recognize that nobody cares as much as you do, then question if that victim role’s return on investment is even worth it. Inevitably, after much humming and hawing, you realize that the answer is no. It’s just not worth it. Then, depending on how many times you’ve been around this block, you either fixate on the next life situation in order to find your next victim role in it, or (if you’re fortunate enough), you have a lightbulb moment where you begin testing the waters of no longer needing to be saved or protected.
When that lightbulb finally does switch on, the veil of isolation and separation lifts. Everything changes. No longer do you look at the world and view its atrocities and injustices as proof of life’s divisive nature, but rather as proof of life’s intricate evolutionary impulse to remember itself. No longer do you look at the challenges of your inner world and find proof of your victimhood, but rather proof of your readiness to further let go of the mind-made identity.
When you’re ready, you lose all hope and all despair. You no longer hold your pain as sacred and so you stop defending and condemning it. The omnipresence of your aloneness becomes fully realized and so all victims and perpetrators disappear.
When you’re ready, everything becomes proof that unity is real.
